About the Role
You will be building a simple, internal web application to track lab assets including testers, stations, boards, and chips. Engineers will use the tool to check in / check out equipment, see where assets are located, and identify who is currently using which tester or board. In addition to software development, you will help organize, label, and register existing lab inventory as part of the initial system rollout.
Overall, you will gain exposure to both software development and lab operations, own an end-to-end project from idea to deployment, and produce a strong, practical portfolio project with real impact
What You’ll Build
Asset tracking for testers, stations, boards, and chips
Check-in / check-out workflow with full history (audit log)
Asset relationships (chip-on-board, board-on-station, station-on-tester)
Global search to quickly locate any asset
Simple status tracking (available / in-use / repair / retired)
Admin interface for adding and editing assets
Authentication for internal users: basic login or Google SSO
Deliverables
Working internal web application deployed for team use (on a single internal server or VM)
Organized and labeled initial lab inventory
Database schema and migrations
Core workflows: search, check-in/out, move, attach/detach
Deployed system usable by the team
Clear README and handoff documentation
Additional Responsibilities:
Work with lab engineers to inventory existing equipment
Physically organize and label lab assets (tags, names, locations)
Enter and verify initial asset data in the system
Help define naming and labeling conventions for lab equipment
Requirements:
Experience building a small web application (coursework or personal project)
Familiarity with Python
Basic understanding of SQL and relational data models
Comfortable using Git
Willingness to work both in software and in the lab environment
Nice to Have
Prior Django experience
Experience with internal tools or CRUD applications
Interest in hardware labs or engineering workflows
Detail-oriented and organized when working with physical equipment
Salary Range: $20 - $40 / hr
